How to Measure Windows for Shutters (The Right Way)

Why Measuring Matters

Every pair of Cedar Republic shutters is custom-cut to your exact specifications. That means getting your measurements right is the single most important step in the ordering process. Standard sizing doesn't apply here — we don't sell pre-made sizes that you hope will be close enough. We build to your numbers. A few minutes with a tape measure saves weeks of frustration.

Step 1: Measure Window Width

Measure the width of your window opening — from the inside edge of the left trim to the inside edge of the right trim. This is the full opening your shutters will flank. Each individual shutter will be approximately half this width. Don't include the trim itself in the measurement unless you want the shutters to overlap it. Write this number down as your 'opening width.'

Step 2: Measure Window Height

Measure from the top of the window trim (or the head casing) straight down to the bottom of the window trim (or the sill). This is your shutter height. Most shutters match the full window height, but some homeowners prefer shutters that are slightly taller or shorter for aesthetic reasons. If you're not sure, match the trim height — it's the most traditional and balanced look.

Step 3: Check for Obstructions

Before you order, look at what's around each window. Light fixtures, downspouts, electrical meters, dryer vents, hose bibs — anything within a few inches of the window could interfere with shutter placement. Measure the clearance on each side and note it. If something is too close, you may need to adjust your shutter width or mounting position.

Step 4: Order with Confidence

Enter your exact height and width measurements when you place your order. We cut every pair to your specs at our Tennessee mill. If you're unsure about anything — sizing, style, obstructions, or mounting — call us at 615.529.1010 before you order. We'd rather spend five minutes on the phone than have you receive shutters that don't fit. That's what real customer service looks like.
